Most holes are drilled but modern machine tools provide alternative methods in the form of milling, which can be advantageous, especially when the size of the hole is large and power and torque is limited. Precision holes (IT7 or better) normally require a secondary finishing operation, made by a boring tool or reamer, but also here milling may be an alternative. Using a precision solid-carbide endmill may also be an alternative as these, in the right type of tool holder, provide high precision and finish. Hole diameter and batch size will determine the direction for methods to be considered.
